Shana Greatman Swers’ Story (From theWashington Post Website)

By Serbino Sandifer-Walker, SMC Editor

At first, I was apprehensive about reading this story.  It was so personal, so private, so tragic. As a mother, I know the deep love one has for a child.  I was in my mid 30s when I had my first and only child. This was Shana Greatman Swers’ first pregnancy at 35. She was so happy.  After all, she had the perfect husband and now the perfect child; and what a perfect family.  But days after having little Isaac, Shana suddenly, unexpectedly died. What made me uneasy about reading this story is how the Washington Post told the story – through Shana’s Facebook updates.  At first, I thought, ‘How insensitive,’ until I started reading the posts.  It’s Shana’s story, unedited and up close.  And for that reason, I think the Washington Post took storytelling to an innovative dimension by embracing social media and perhaps bringing a whole new generation of readers into the fold.
